The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters

5.0

A Native family from Nova Scotia goes to Maine every summer to pick blueberries. They stay in a little cabin and befriend other migrant workers, a highlight of their year. One summer the 4 year old Ruthie goes missing.

Early on you learn that Ruthie is now Norma, being raised by an affluent couple who gaslights her early memories and questions about her differences.

In alternating chapters Norma grows up while her biological family experiences grief, additional trauma, and pain. Her brother Joe, closest in age when Ruthie went missing is the other main character. He runs from darkness, shame, and his family as well as the guilt of Ruthie’s disappearance.

This was a beautiful story! It captures the twisting emotions of pain, love, and grief in a way that makes you feel every development. I cried through the last quarter, happy for the slices of redemption at the end.
