This is a comfort read through and through. Like a warm cup of coffee (and not only because coffee is a major part of the book), its goodness comes from both predictability and warmth.
Tbh I wasn’t sure if I’d like it. As a fan of epic adventure fantasy, I had heard it was notoriously low-stakes (although low stakes does not no stakes). The worldbuilding is pretty much generic D&D. But the characters are so lovable and good that I couldn’t help but enjoy it. And it tells a nice story about retirement, about what to do when the adventure is over, about building roots and finding community, and how to start anew.
