SERIES REVIEW - Holly Jackson

“And though this story does have it’s monsters, I’ve found that it is not one that can be so easily divided into the good and the bad. In the end, this was a story about the people and their different shades of desperation, crashing up against each other.”

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this series! Although it has been buzzing around booksta for a while, I haven’t been in a rush to dive in. When I got the series set for Christmas from a friend and a buddy read opportunity came up, I decided it was time. And boy, am I glad I did! I devoured the books back-to-back in June and July, which turned out to be perfect timing with the Netflix adaptation dropping on August 1st.

Plot Thoughts: I found the first book to be my favorite, with the second coming in a close second, and the third book—though still thoroughly enjoyable—being my least favorite of the trio. I was a bit apprehensive about the YA label, as I often find myself less drawn to that genre these days, but this series pleasantly surprised me with its darker edge. It strikes a great balance for those who enjoy a thrill without veering into full-on horror territory.

Character Thoughts: I’m grateful this series was a trilogy, as it allowed for deeper character development than a standalone could offer. By the end of book one, I was craving more character growth, but the gripping plot made it forgivable. The development took some unexpected turns, which I ended up appreciating. In a rare twist, I found myself liking the MMC more than the FMC —sorry, Pip!
