The Fall of Hyperion
by Dan Simmons
This was not a fast read. It was dense. It has been several years since I read the first Hyperion novel, so I don't actually remember if that one was equally as dense or not. I do, however, remember the format of the first novel and this one is quite different. Whereas the first novel was basically a collection of fascinating short stories tied together by an overall meta-plot, this book is basically the payoff of that meta-plot (which was actually something that really bothered me at the end of the first book - the lack of payoff).
This novel continues the stories of our previous protagonists as well as introducing us to a new one. The ideas present in this book were just as fascinating as the ideas in its predecessor, but it seemed to lose itself in its own prose at times. When two of your main characters are poets it gets tedious. I'm reading this for the societal ramifications of reliance on AI and the technologies they provide, such as farcasters, not for the religious parallels and imagery of an evolving God.
That's not to say the extremely strong religious aspects of this book weren't interesting! It's just not what I tend to like to read, whereas the other aspects of the book were exactly the kind of book I like to read. The book got in its own way when it came to my enjoyment of it. Will I go on to read Endymion? Maybe, but definitely not right away.
