Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery

4.0

I've tried for YEARS to read Anne of Green Gables, and have never managed to get into it. I chalked it up to being too old when I started it, but really I think I just couldn't relate to Anne.
Because this? I was immediately hooked. It's one of those I know I would have obsessed over if I'd read it as a kid. Emily is a wonderful character, and it's so delightful to see the world through her perspective. All her friends are really great as well, although the weird "atheist shaming" would bug me a little.
I would have easily rated this 5 stars if it wasn't for the late-game arrival of Dean Priest. It immediately added some dinge to the once sparkling world of New Moon. He left an awful taste in my mouth. Knowing he's in the other books as well fills me with a little dread, because I don't really want to see a predator start his grim work.
Still, I really enjoyed this story. It's sad that it's so overshadowed by Montgomery's other work, because it's truly spectacular.
