Drama City by George Pelecanos

4.0

Every book I read by this guy, I think, "this is his best one" but there really is a lot more going on here than in earlier work like "Shoedog" (which is also awesome.) Although, "Drama City" has not helped my dog phobia. One of the main characters is an ex-con working for the humane society, 'the dog police,' and then it's Pelecanos so of course it's all D.C. ghetto dogs he's checking on. Shudder. It's kinda obvious how Pelecanos is playing with humans' ability to show more sympathy for an abused dog than for an abused man but he doesn't harp on it. He just describes one and then the other, he doesn't insult the reader's intelligence.
