Reagan: The Life
by H.W. Brands
Brands never disappoints with his history works and this recent one-volume biography of our 40th president is another solid addition to his presidential biographies. I believe this is the 11th Brands-authored history book I've now read and while I don't place it on the same high level as his bios of FDR, Andrew Jackson, Benjamin Franklin, Teddy Roosevelt or some of his works on economic history, I did feel I learned quite a bit on Reagan by reading this biography.
In particular, it was very detailed on the Reagan-Gorbachev summits, his role in the Iran-Contra Affair and his relationship with Nancy Reagan, all key components in understanding the man who has become such a popular leader since departing Washington. Reagan wasn't immune from controversy and handled adversity and challenges to his leadership with strength, dignity and a little bit of humor. And that's a lesson that could still be applied today.
