nikitavandrangi 's review for:
Beartown
by Fredrik Backman
I liked this; I didn't love it. The setting is captivating—a cold, dying hockey town. There are standout characters, Benji, Kira, Amat, to name a few. And, the story is a frustrating but real cautionary tale about human nature, herd mentality, and loyalty.
But, I'm not sure Fredrik Backman's writing style is for me. There's a little too much going on with all the characters and their individual arcs, and the writing is a little too vague. It diluted the story, some really important moments felt lackluster, and was just the slightest bit of a drag to read in the second half. I would've liked it more if the writing was tighter and only focused on certain key players to highlight the strengths of the story.
