Blandings Castle by P.G. Wodehouse
4.5

Blandings has become a bit of a sanctuary for me in recent years, and whenever the summer rolls around I start pining for that Shropshire castle and its eccentric cast of characters. The quote from Evelyn Waugh inside this dust jacket says it best: 'Wodehouse's idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own. He has made a world for us to live in and delight in.'

'More irksome' is an understatement for these modern times but the result is nonetheless the same. Blandings is a place of literary comfort and escapism of the quintessentially English kind, involving some of my favourite characters to have ever been put to page.

The book in question is a collection of a dozen short stories (only half of which are, in fact, about Blandings) set before the events of the brilliant novel 'Summer Lightning'. They run chronologically and each one is packed full of the farce, wit and humour we have all become accustomed to from the great man.

The other half dozen are mostly set in Hollywood where Wodehouse used to work as a screenwriter, about a character called Mr Mulliner. I must confess to skipping these, adhering to a strictly Blandings-only vibe, but I'm sure they were of the same level of quality. I mean, this is Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse we are talking about for goodness sake!

P. G. Wodehouse was an incredibly prolific writer, knocking out hundreds of stories, scripts and plays over the course of his life. Yet despite this enormous output I suspect Blandings will always be my favourite. A first and enduring love. There is nothing that can compare... probably. I just wish I could tell him how grateful I am that he has given me a home away from home.

Best read in the sunshine with an iced tea.
