The Stranger I Married by Sylvia Day
4.0

Re-read 2023:
First of all, the MMC's name did not bother me. Not at all. Second of all, I'm glad his first love died. Does that make me a b*tch? Probably. But I don't care.

“I know you grow rather fond of your paramours, but you have to dismiss them eventually, and not due to boredom. You are not that type of woman. No, you have to release them because they fall in love with you, and then want more. You refuse to take married men to your bed, so all of your lovers are free and they all wish to marry you.”

I think this is the only historical that I've read so far with this kind of heroine. She actively has affairs and she's the one who leaves when they start feeling more for her.

Gerard/Gray, on the other hand, has an affair with his married childhood love while keeping mistresses on the side. He convinces Pel to marry him so they can continue their ways but be unavailable to those who want to marry them. They develop a great friendship at first until something happens and Gerard decides to disappear. He comes back as a changed man after 4 years, sees Pel with new eyes, and wants to give real marriage a try.

I love that this is like a two for one love story since Rhys, Pel's brother, also finds love in this book. That side story was very enjoyable as well.

Aside from the smut, I really love Sylvia Day's characters. That's why most of her books are so unforgettable to me.

I have read this a few times. I think the main reason I keep going back to it is the fact that Isabel is the one who does the loving and leaving with her paramours.
