Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases by Paul Holes

challenging dark emotional hopeful informative medium-paced

4.5

I'm a big fan of true crime, especially when it involves cold cases and serial killers, so needless to say I was STOKED when I got this one in the mail.

QUICK TAKE: A memoir from the detective who found the Golden State Killer detailing his most memorable cases and looking into the many rewards and challenges his career as a cold case detective had on his life.

This book was captivating from the start and read much more like a thriller than a typical non-fiction. The writing was intriguing and honest although this is definitely not for the faint of heart. The crime scene descriptions were written with a lot of detail and were pretty gruesome at times. I had to actively remind myself that what I was reading actually happened, which was a bit unsettling given how literally close to home these crimes took place, but it was such an exciting ride.

I highly recommend this one, especially if you read I'll Be Gone in the Dark and enjoy the show Criminal Minds, and if you're a true crime lover, this is a must read for sure.

Thank you Celadon Books for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!
