Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes
by Edith Hamilton
Edith Hamilton's textbook of Mythology is most definitely a worthwhile read for classics lovers (me). I appreciate Hamilton's transparency in the fact that her retellings change tone based on which author/poet she was using as a source. In that way, retellings that were based on one author were factual and to the point while others utilized a lot of flowery language. It was interesting to see the stories through her lens, but also through the lens of the original author and how they chose to tell the story.
On top of that, it was obvious when Hamilton was interjecting in the story to add her own thoughts. While her interjections were minimal, it was entertaining nonetheless and added depth and thought to the stories.
