A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear by Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling

A nice cathartic reminder that libertarian efforts to strip government to the bones are bond to fail for the exact reasons you’d expect, plus some funnier reasons you didn’t. You can feel the book straining to cohere all its connections, and I think the reality falls a bit short of the satisfying story of toxoplasmosis-crazed bears. Still, a detailed, engaging, and empathetic portrait of a small New England town, even when I wouldn’t have granted many of its players the same benefit of the doubt. When the libertarian plans go awry, it doesn’t feel mean-spirited like it could have. But you can still feel an author who is holding back saying “you should’ve seen this coming” Also a great reminder of how bears are truly wild.
