The Midnight Star
by Marie Lu
an iconic trilogy but it does not get the respect it deserves.
-------------------------
oh goodness. this book. this BOOK. as you can see, i'm tackling my very long summer book bucket list and i'm happy to conclude a trilogy i have been reading for a while now. let's get into the thoughts.
plot/concept
-alright the whole premise of this book was that the young elites were in danger and their powers were starting to have negative implications on them. the gods wanted them to give their powers back. the whole concept of having these people viewed as monsters get the chance to be mortal after the awful lives they have had was a great conclusion and really brought up important themes.
characters
-raffeale. okay he was one of my favorite characters in this trilogy, and i'm sad to see/read him go. i felt like he was this wise older brother that really looked out for the others while having killer instincts. he was the one that brought the group together to save humanity while taking care of violetta. he helped adelina master her powers even when he didn't want/have to. raffeale is the friend that i think everyone should want because regardless of his past, he was someone that was able to provide consul and just be good person in the end.
-enzo. him dying was inevitable. i don't have much to say about this other than the fact that i wished he DIDN'T DIE IN THE YOUNG ELITES bc i really feel like that emotionally hurt me. enzo didn't deserve this darkness after he had been kicked out for being a malfetto. why can't the leave the dead untouched.
-maeve. great character. liked how her story wrapped with agreeing to help raffeale and getting the ending she wanted with Lucent. power doesn't beat love, (i will continue on this idea in 2.5 seconds)
-teren. he reminds me of Clancy from the darkest minds trilogy because you want to hate him but you respect him as a character. all teren wanted was to honor the gods and be normal. him dying was a perfect full circle of him finally meeting his destiny and giving his powers back to the gods. i really liked teren even if he did kill my enzo. and this whole psychotic/narcisstic demeanor he played throughout the trilogy really made me like him even more. it just gave me warner in shatter me vibes.
the ending.
-when they reach the underworld, after the death of violetta and teren, they are forced to give up their powers. now here is where it gets crazy and when i questioned my morals.
-adelina gives her powers up and it was beautiful to see the voices in her head stop. those voices that encouraged her to turn on people and become a selfish person were gone. she was free to be herself and i loved that.
-until adelina is considering sacrificing her life to Moritas to bring her sister, violetta, BACK TO LIFE. this part was in the last 30 pages and i was crying because omg omg omg what in the WORLD. you see her contemplating giving her life and her imagining herself being queen and having a life with Magiano (who i must add was such an amazing character because even though adelina was this anti-hero character, he saw the good in her and was always right by her side) and she decides that all she has done is be selfish her entire life. she can't have the future she wanted, and she gives her life for violetta. again this idea power doesn't stop love.
- then you have this beautiful scene where adelina and violetta are talking for the last time and adelina is explaining why she did this. she says this impactful line,
"after a lifetime of darkness, I want to leave something behind that is made of light."
like how beautiful was that. adelina keeps saying how they will be sisters forever through death and beyond. their time ends with saying "i love you." geez these sisters went through so much and i can't deal with the emotion of violetta getting another chance at life and adelina giving hers up. beautiful scene.
-it also ends with violetta asking compasia to take pity on her and adelina was made a star in the night sky, which i thought was the perfect ending to the story. adelina is always watching her sister like she said. geez am i getting emotional?? this story was beautiful.
-i believe it is better than the legend trilogy because adelina was a complicated character that was flawed and did things that are considered "antagonist" behavior, but she still had remorse and love for others. that's the beauty of this legend/story, we aren't confined to one definition. we have our good times and our bad. we are the protagonist and the antagonist in life and we all have the chance to do good. it's just a matter of what choice you are willing to make
