I’ll keep it short - this book is comforting yet miserable, a gorgeous description of an injustice not enforced by law but by the heart. Worth reading for its Wessex setting - a bucolic dream more diverse and dangerous than meets the eye - as well as for the reward of its contemplative characters. Let them surprise you.
