This book broke my heart in a million little ways, leaving it with a chip and a crack like a teacup handed down from a grandmother. I hoped, against all hope, for a bit of hope, for a bit of light, for a bit of joy for Iris, for Olive, for Amanda, for George even, for a way where maybe they could win, just a little bit, where they could have joy, instead of nothing but suffering. It would be too much to hope for the Johns, the Rogers, the Kelvins, the angry Davids of this world to  get what was coming for them, but at least, a wee bit more hope and joy for these women... my heart bobbed up and down like a seagull in the waves during the last few moments, a thought that maybe, and indeed, maybe, maybe, off in the distance, maybe...  This novel was brilliant and beautiful and poetic, and had me immersed in a world I know exists... I just wished and wanted for a small bit of sunlight to breakthrough that North Atlantic fog. But perhaps, that's speaking like someone from another, less cruel side of the Atlantic.
