Song of Susannah by Stephen King
3.0

King wrote the last three Dark Tower books back to back to back at a frenzied pace. Subsequently the final three books read more like a trilogy within a bigger cycle. Song of Susannah is the middle of that trilogy and likewise it suffers in the way many middle books do. The plot is thin and what is there gets bogged down in a lot of exposition. Most of the real estate is dedicated to world building, which is not a bad thing; the world of the Dark Tower has always been the major draw for me.

This all barrels toward an abrupt and unexpected ending which is very unlike King. It’s all capped off by a wonderful Coda which I imagine was and still is divisive among his Constant Readers.

By no means is Song of Susannah a bad book. It is definitely the weakest link in the series but to say that is like saying the jelly is the weakest part of your peanut butter and jelly sandwich — maybe it’s not your favorite part but it’s still a vital component.
