I honestly don't know what to say here. This book left me speechless. I've always known about the horrible and terrifying treatment of the poor and the mentally ill in prior centuries , but this is the first time I've been brave enough to really delve deeper. This is the story of Blackwell's Island, now Roosevelt Island in New York City, the former location of the penitentiary, alms house, hospital for the poor, work house, and the insane asylum in the latter half of the 19th century. And wow. What a book. I found that it was hard to put it down. The writing is well done. The story is compelling, if horribly tragic, and is one that needs to be told.
