zubscovered 's review for:
Magpie
by Elizabeth Day
dark
emotional
mysterious
sad
tense
fast-paced
Fast paced psychological thriller, which focuses on some really tough issues from fertility to mental health and for that I applaud the author's courage in writing with no constraints. It was actually a breath of fresh air to read such an honest account of what a person goes through and I really just want to sit with Elizabeth Day and ask her how she deals with the emotional impact of a story like this on herself, as she is writing it. Because to be quite honest certain parts totally floored me.
Bravo to Miss Day for bringing these (too often) "behind closed doors" and "out of sight, out of mind" heart-breaking unfairness to the forefront. I have always said that books, especially fiction books, have a way to educate their readers without them even knowing and this one was definitely a great vehicle for not only educating but empowering a person too. Yes, it was fantastic thriller but dig deeper and her topic of discussions were actually very raw and powerful.
Now for my ‘thrilling’ (see what I did there?) review. I have read so many thrillers this year. I, fancy myself as quite the detective usually guessing who the culprit is quite earlier on but with this book, assume nothing. I am actually smiling as I type this because when I read THAT particular chapter that shifted my entire perception, that déjà vu moment you experience which is the same but not quite the same was just phenomenal.
Unbelievably twisted and I loved every single word of its bat shit crazy pages. I literally sat there thinking what the hell just happened?! You assume SO much. Jealous girlfriend, pregnancy hormones etc You automatically think ‘uh oh bunny boiler’ moment coming. No matter how much of a detective you think you are THIS book will leave you blind-sided.
The writing was superb and cleverly constructed to help conceal major plots. It flowed with consistency chapter to chapter offering small snippets of information to put together this crazy puzzle. I think having a dual narratives helped tremendously with this.
Thriller fans, this is one you definitely need to add.
