“Child. When you are walking the halls of the house of slaughter, you need to wear your bandana at all times. When you've earned your place, your bandana will have teeth, like mine or Jessica's. For now, you will just wear the color of the hunter inducting you. Black.”

They say don't judge a book by it's cover but I only picked up the first 3 volumes of this Eisner Award Nominated graphic novel based only on the title and the cover art. I am so glad that I did.

Monsters are real and Erica Strange hunts them. In this volume, however, we go back in time to discover her origin story, as it were. From the killing of her parent's by a monster to her induction into the House of Slaughter.

We also learn more about the working of the Houses and the 'usual' process for recruiting new members.

Very much a volume to set the scene for a wider ranging Universe. However, it was just as good as the first three volumes and very much a must read for fans. 5 stars.
