The book takes place in a fantasy version of 1840s "America" under colonization, with main characters including a young indigenous girl, a young indigenous boy whose parents were killed just after his birth for participation in an anti-colonization rebellion and was raised in a white household to be a servant , and a Black maid who is indentured. Characters make references to past events that include genocidal violence, and the main character faces continuous micro- and macroaggressions as someone who is multiply marginalized.
