This has been on my to-read list, like most, far too long. It is a text, I discovered, among my circle of friends, that is well known yet not well read. I had no expectations of it when I set out to read it and perhaps, because of this, I found it delightful, thoughtful, and inspiring. I can't recall the last time I found myself highlighting so much of any text. The first third of the book is an impressive treatise on living simply within one's means, and has much to say about our consumer culture 170 years later. While there were long sections in the last half of the book that I found tedious, I am happy I read it and hope to return to it again.
