Five Little Indians by Michelle Good

5.0

As a white settler in Canada, I believe it is incredibly important to learn as much as possible about our violent history towards Indigenous people so that we may work together towards reconciliation. This learning can come from many places, but as an avid reader of fiction it is books like this one that give me the most access and insight into the harm caused by the residential school system.

My eyes were opened and my heart was shattered again and again while reading this novel. I feel so deeply for each character. For the terror they felt and the abuse they suffered and the inescapable impacts that it had on their lives. These may be fictional characters, but these narratives are real and they make me want to be better and do better to help repair the harm that was caused.
