Grave Mistake: A Stacey & Gabriel Standalone in the Amethyst's Wand Shop Mysteries Series by Arizona Tape, Laura Greenwood, Laura Greenwood

5.0

This is book twelve of the Amethyst’s Wand Shop Mysteries series and is a short story best read between book seven and eight, which tells the tale of Doctor Stacey Barnes, forensic pathologist for the Paranormal Police Department (PPD) and her best friend Doctor Gabriel Rook (Gabe), head forensic investigator, who was also her brother’s best friend growing up. Both are necromancers and use their powers for solving crimes, especially murders. Stacey and Gabe have danced around their attraction for each other, neither willing to expose their feelings for the other, thinking it will ruin their friendship and working relationship. Stacey has a list of the most unusual sorts of crimes she would love to experience, on a bucket list, and is about to have one of them knocked off her list. She and Gabe will be working with Detective Knight Ambrose (known only as Ambrose) and Amy (Ames), Amethyst of the Gemstone Coven, wand maker and consultant to the PPD. Amy’s sister Topaz is getting married shortly to her fiancé Steve, a police officer at the PPD, and the whole wedding planning process has been stressful. Amy and Ambrose are quite happy as they are and not worried about being pressured to get married just yet! Even if Amy and Topaz’s parents have suddenly turned up from their wandering and are staying with Amy’s Grammie, next door above the wand shop!

The latest unusual murder takes place in a mortuary, run by necromancers, leaving Stacey and Gabe to investigate some of their own, whilst trying to keep their emotions separate. Stacey is on charge of the morgue and head pathologist, but this case needs a lot of back up from Gabe’s investigators, as well as Ambrose and Amy’s input from interviewing possible suspects. Someone is clearing covering up a secret or two, hiding exactly what happened to the dead victim. A magical signature that Stacey detected on the body, will allow her to identify the killer, but only if they can fit a person to that signature. A meeting with Amy and Topaz’s parents, especially their mother, at a do to celebrate Topaz and Steve’s upcoming wedding, leaves Gabe in an embarrassed and shocked situation as their mother flirts openly with Gabe in front of her husband! When Stacey sees this, she walks over to Gabe and pretends to be his girlfriend to stop their mother flirting with him anymore. They stick together after that and an uncomfortable situation leads to them ending up in a clinch at the end of the night, as Stacey dares Gabe to kiss her! The next morning back at work, leaves both parties wondering where they stand and their usual comfortable nature is left in a mess as emotions and embarrassment of whether the other doesn’t like them in the same way, builds a bit of a gap between them. The tension between them is growing and both want to get back to the comfortable manner they have always had. A slow burn romance between the two necromancers, but the spark between them cannot be ignored much longer! Great storyline and seeing the obvious attraction between Stacey and Gabe finally reach a happy conclusion, in this standalone read. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have also bought the book since I love the series. I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
