Ptolemy's Gate by Jonathan Stroud

4.5

Jonathan Stroud was certainly bold with how he ended things, giving an unclean ending to a children’s series! It was dramatic, unexpected, and totally impressive.

Nathaniel, now 17, holds a powerful seat in the British government and tasked with keeping the commoners in control in the face of an unpopular foreign war they are losing. Kitty, troubled by the conversation she had with Bartimaeus in the previous book, is in search for answers about the bond between magicians and demons. The conspiracy three books in the making is finally reaching its crescendo and the shadowy figure behind it all finally reveals himself in a final battle of epic proportions.

We finally get a glimpse of the bond between Bartimaeus and Ptolemy and how his strained relationship with Nathaniel parallels and diverges with this. I nearly shed a few tears at how their relationship has evolved. Though the book feels to be moving too fast, it does give us explanations and answers to some lingering questions and plot threads left over from previous books. I just wanted more time with the characters. And as much as I loved the dramatic ending, I am yearning for an epilogue.
