I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

2.0

didn't love this! the writing was good, yes, but it only started getting good at about page 70, and then stopped being good once the protagonist went into the school.

i found myself not particularly caring about jake or the girlfriend, but really enjoyed the interactions with jake's parents and the farmhouse. and i wasn't a huge fan of the creepy man following the protagonist in the creepy school finale. the writing in this part just felt convoluted and made no sense, and i like books that leave me guessing most of the time! but in this book i just was not a fan of it at all. the writing had a sense of self importance, like this twist was so deep and shocking, but it really fell flat for me.

mindfucks are great, i love them, but not when the basis is so uninteresting. the final part about reading the book again was really dumb also like no i'm not reading this again goodbye
