The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow

5.0

This is an excellently done novel that makes Mary a sympathetic heroine who undergoes (undertakes, even) signficant character development in the course of the novel.

Should you choose to read it, you'll come across a few familar faces:
Mrs. Bennet is worse than ever. Mr. Collins is Mr. Collins. Jane and Lizzy are a little less sympathetic from Mary's point of view, and Aunt and Uncle Gardiner are dears, as ever.

But Mary shines. She has a reason to start off as cold and pious and logical as she first comes across. And as she grows to realize that even the most detached logic can't protect her entirely from hurt, she starts to become a whole person, with dreams and feelings and uncompromising character all her own. I love her.

Mrs. Hadlow does an excellent job echoing Austen's characters and style without being derivative or too predictable. I thought it was great.
