And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini

4.0

I picked up this book (to listen to) because I liked The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns so much. I didn't like And the Mountains Echoed nearly as much. It is books like this one that make me want to know how I should compute my rating.

How do I rate a book if I think a book if I think it is very well written, but it doesn't hold my interest. Perhaps I should just not finish it, and thus, not face the issue. This is the case with And the Mountains Echoed. Hosseini is an excellent writer, but this just did not hold my interest.

Perhaps I just like stories that have happy endings, or at least have the possibility. Although, books set in Afghanistan is likely to be fraught with difficulty. It is, however, beautifully written; parts, perhaps large parts, are almost poetic.

Khaled Hosseini does offer beautifully crafted characters. Unfortunately, placing them in a country which has been war for a century; how can we expect a feel good story.

I have to say that it is probably worth the read.
