I really really enjoyed this story! Well let's say I devoured this book. I constantly wanted to listen further and know what happens next. The story made be swoon and cry and I cannot wait to start book 2!! I will describe the things I loved and other thoughts but they include spoilers:
**Big spoilers ahead so do not read further if you do not want to read spoilers!!
>> Things I loved:
- How the way the magic works. Blood magic, fresh is always better than old and how your own magic can cast different spells then the blood of others. Willingly given or taken by force. And that cuts made for a spell will create a silver scar that they make art/tattoos out of. Fascinating!
- That the author made a women's period a powerful thing for rune instead of something inconvenient. It was for Rune her only way to do magic. So she was looking forward to that time of the month.
- The plottwist with Verity! Omg I did not see that coming! Kudos, I love surprises. I realised it when Rune could not find Verity at the University. But I was also shocked. The amount of personal information Cressida knows about her and that Rune has no one she truly trusts now.. Loved it but also heartbreaking in combination with Alex' death.
- The side characters, they were fun too. I was a bit annoyed sometimes with Alex but as much as I'm annoyed with him not telling Rune the truth I also understand that perhaps he deep down he knows she might not see him as a friend.
- The way the author describes feelings and relationships. They felt so real and made me really emotionally involved to the story (and cry sometimes).
- The narration of the audiobook. Big compliments to the narrator Grace Gray, she did an amazing job and I was happy to see she narrates book 2 as well. Can't wait to start it (today can't wait longer haha)
- The complexity of the connection between Gideon and Rune. Both from different worlds with different goals/mission but somehow without all these things not so different. Their connection and attraction was so palpable and the most intimate scene was absolutely exhilarating to read. Also it is genuinely enemies to lovers to enemies again. Bc they really are enemies not just annoyed with each other.
- That I did not hate anything about this book
>> Other thoughts:
- The death of Alex was so sad. And a bit too convinient in my opinion. Gideon lives for the next book (no more love triangle) and Alex' blood saves the witches.
- Wish I would've seen more of the crimson with good work of rescuing witches but we only been told what she did and how she manipulated the young men around her for Intel. We now see her blunder a lot because of various reasons (ahum Gideon). I would've loved to actually have one of these scenes written out in the book. Maybe as a start. Although also a great idea for a prequel short story! *thinks thoughtfully*.
