Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
4.0

I see why this is a classic.

Ok, Frankenstein has intimidated me for actual years. Little me was very scared by anything that had "horror" in the description, and I actually managed to talk my way out of reading this book in high school. This year I finally decided to put the old prejudices aside and give the book an actual attempt.

I found a very nuanced conversation about responsibility, blame, entitlement, and guilt that felt just as applicable to today's world as I'm sure it did to its original audience. The story made me think deeper about topics I'd already been pondering (as any good classic does), and I'm better off for having read it. Maybe one day I'll read it again to savor the themes anew.
