I've seen a lot of reviews saying that readers lost steam in the back half of this one. I thought the back half was more engaging than the front. Once we get to know the characters and the world, the story unfolds and we're officially in the adventure. It's definitely written as if the author plans to revisit this world for a few more books. Maybe that's why people don't like the back? They read it as a stand-alone instead of the foundation of a series?
