What They Always Tell Us by Martin Wilson

3.0

It was okay. The writing was a bit clunky and awkward - especially about Black people and girls. Race was only mentioned when the person was Black, and they were always a runner, football player, etc. Girls only ate salad for Thanksgiving and walked around the track in PE while the girls all walked. It just felt like mentioning stereotypes for the sake of mentioning them which I get a bit bothered by. It wasn't enough to ruin the book for me though.
The story was pretty good. It didn't stay with me but I enjoyed it while I was reading it. The foreshadowing was a bit aggressive for what turned out to be a lowkey ending but I would still recommend it to young people.
