Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan

Uh, yes, just all of the yes.

I love the tale of Chang'e, it is one of my favourite mythological tales of all time. And this was just a fantastic addition to the re-tellings of it!

Centering on the child of Chang'e, her story of freeing her mother takes her on a journey of love, broken hearts, friendship and sticking to what you believe in.

I really liked the love triangle (or well, right angle aha) dynamic here, often it feels like the female just gets used by the men and her love is constantly exploited to pull her in different directions, here however she stands up for herself and despite also acknowledging her feelings she still strives towards her goal and doesn't let that be forcably shifted by others.

The ending was slightly confusing however, it doesn't give any indications that there's a sequel coming. While I'm not the biggest fan of a massive cliffhanger, if I wasn't previously aware there's a sequel releasing and I'd just say, randomly found the book on a store shelf and brought it with no knowledge, I don't think I'd have ended the book with "wow that was great, can't wait for more of it" but instead probably "wow that was great, everything was tied up nicely at the end what a great single". Since.. everything does feel wrapped up neatly. Not all ends are tied but it's done in a way that it feels like a natural conclusion. I'm still super hyped for the sequel, but I'm just curious as to what the transition between the books will be like.
