This is a novel explores the harsh realities of life as a woman living in the traditional Chinese society, through the eyes of a young Chinese woman who will go on to become some sort of doctor specializing in women’s healthcare. It is also about complicated female friendships and coming into one’s own in a system where rebellion against the norm is discouraged.

It wasn’t what I expected while delving into it and I still can’t quite believe that it is what it turned out to be. Whilst I appreciate Lisa See’s meticulous exposition of the status accorded to women in traditional Chinese society particularly amongst people that practice Confucianism; I think that the one dimensional approach to the character development did not allow the story to become as evocative as it ought to have been. That said, in true Lisa See fashion, she was able to tie everything neatly together in the end.

It was very interesting to have been offered a glimpse into the traditional justice system as was the practice in ancient Chinese Kingdoms. I really enjoyed watching the mystery unravel and seeing justice being done.
