Every Sweet Thing Is Bitter by Samantha Crewson
emotional
sad
fast-paced
- Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes

Although this book deals with heavy subject matter (the content warning at the beginning is appropriately placed), it is with the goal of addressing the theme of abuse and how it manifests through different generations & family members.
There is a slight thriller/mystery element to the story's construction, but this novel really is an exploration of family and the way those relationships shape our outlook on the world.
