It is a romcom with a nice opening conceit, a woman's girlfriend orders that they go on a break so that the protagonist can get more experience of same sex relationships, and there's some nice observations. However it felt a bit flat, the characters weren't fully formed, information about them would land on the reader, from the existence of a cat or a PhD thesis without being introduced, the setting (Bristol mostly), and the conclusion was less telegraphed than broadcast, felt a bit anywhere. But it barrelled along and kept my attention and like the sap that I am I was drawn into the final romantic denouement and ended it with a moist eye.
