Beneath its laughter there was a knife's edge, ready to slip and slash them both to pieces. Hettie felt it as clearly as she felt her own heartbeat; rather than dread or disquiet, though, it filled her with vicious joy. Let them be scarred and bloody. Let them tear shreds, one out of the other. What else did they deserve?
