I imagine Simmons is a fan of the movie (and/or play) Amadeus, because one could very well picture Dickens as Mozart and Collins as Salieri. The only thing that bugged me was that throughout the book, there were spoilers to Our Mutual Friend and The Moonstone. I know they're both in the public domain, but maybe people would like to read them and be surprised. If Simmons wanted to talk about them in detail, he should have written a separate work of criticism. Thankfully, I skimmed over these sections. Overall, my second favorite work of Simmons after the Hyperion novels
