The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang

5.0

"But eventually, you'll have to ask yourself precisely what you're fighting for. And you'll have to find a reason to live past vengeance."

This might be my new favorite book of all time. I took a month between reading the first and second book in this trilogy because the first was so brutal but I was so excited to be back in this world again. I can't say much because it would spoil the first book but this picks up with Rin navigating the results of what happened in the first book and the whole thing is complicated and messy. It leaves the reader to really sort out their feelings about Rin and what she's doing, why she's doing it, and whether or not it's right. There are some deeply sad moments and soke scenes that had me throwing the book down to immediately explain the whole plot to my partner so I could tell him about what I just read. RF Kuang does an fantastic job and taking real historical events and building them into this fantastical world and that's why I am such a big historical fantasy fan. This is what I love to see and I'm excited and scared to finish this series soon.
