The Woman in the Purple Skirt by Natsuko Imamura

4.0

Thank you, Penguin Books, for sending me a finished copy!

Don't let the size of this book fool you. This book is about so many things. It's about loneliness, prejudice, obsession, manipulation.

The narrator (the woman in the yellow cardigan) is obsessed with another woman that seems to be as lonely as herself (the Woman in the purple skirt). She speculates about every detail in the other woman's life. Although she doesn't reveal anything about her own circumstances, I couldn't avoid believing that she was talking about herself, projecting her motivations. She creates a conjecture after another without much evidence.

The book is short, and not much happens in terms of action, but it's very well written and can be read in one sitting.

It's a quick read. The language is charming and, for moments, can be a little unsettling, in a good way.
