Lovelight Farms by B.K. Borison

medium-paced

4.5

Update on my reread from 12/2023: I still really enjoyed this, but definitely liked it better in print than on audio. I didn't dislike the audio, and was also distracted by some other reads, to be fair, but the pace and plot moved more slowly at the beginning and much quicker at the end than I remembered. The one thing that was easier on audio, somehow, was that the nickname LaLa didn't bother me as much. Despite my qualms, there is still so much to like, and I'll let my original review (12/2022) stand—

Rounded up from 4.5 stars.

Stella, a Christmas tree farm owner, needs to make some financial breakthroughs to keep her new business alive, so she applies for a contest with a social media influencer to win prize money and business exposure. The only problem? She lied about owning the business with her non-existent boyfriend. Enter Luka, her best friend of a decade, #fakedating, and feelings that have been real but concealed from day 1 of their friendship.

I feel like this one is getting a lot of hype this holiday season, and I was definitely influenced 😂, but thank you to everyone who suggested it. I liked the small town and the way everyone rallies when they think these two have finally gotten together. The vandalization of the farm, the possibility of raccoons, etc. gave me some Parks & Rec vibes—anyone else? I appreciated that Luka took his time (although 10 years seems a little too long!), having lost his own dad and knowing Stella was grieving the death of her mom. I wanted to know more about Luka’s dad, possibly because my own maiden name is Peters ☺️, but loved seeing his large, Italian, maternal side banter and cook and tease. Other things that won my heart? Hazelnut lattes are severely underrated, and they get some serious love in this book. Finally, the first-person epilogue from Luka’s perspective—I loved getting a tiny peek into the MMC’s mind in The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren, and I loved it here. (One thing that was tough for me? I just couldn’t get down with the nickname La La, 🤷🏻‍♀️😂.)
