Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage: Stories by Alice Munro

5.0

Wonderful collection of stories about love and marriages. Munro establishes the emotional life of her characters effortlessly and with great tone. She's convincing. My favorite stories were:

The Floating Bridge: a story about a women ill with cancer who is dragged along on a visit to her new caretaker's home. Here she encounters a young man who appears to represent both life and death.

Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage: a somewhat preposterous story of unlikely matchmaking and the horrid behavior of teenage girls. I loved the desolate atmosphere of the hotel and its wastrel inmate, put right by a woman who wears short socks with dresses.

The Bear Came Over the Mountain: a story about a woman who moves into a nursing home when her memory deteriorates. When her husband visits, he finds she has largely forgotten him and fallen for another elderly resident, whom she knew when she was young.
