The Only Harmless Great Thing by Brooke Bolander

5.0

If I tell you this story is about glow in the dark elephants, you’d think it’s cute. But what if I tell that the elephants are dying because the human beings are poisoning them though radiation? Also, they’re sentient and they can communicate with humans and tell them exactly what the radiation is doing to them.

This book combines two real life events - the women working in factories during WW2 who were exposed to radiation and an elephant who was electrocuted - spanning an alternative history - which is extremely interesting and very, very engaging. But, if you’re sensitive to animal abuse, please know that going in.

For this reason, I found it incredibly hard to read, but I read it twice, right after finishing it the first time around and I teared up..both times.
