The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
2.0
I really wanted to like this book but I was genuinely disappointed.
The thing that drew me to this book initially was that it was narrated by death himself. I thought it to be genius, and immediately harrowing and heartbreaking. I rarely am into war or history based novels. But as the story went on, I sort of just kept waiting for something to happen.
I’ll admit I fell in love with the characters. So much so that I was dreading the downfall of them. However that dread waned as the story went on.. and on… and on… without anything happening until the last chapter. It edged me the entire time to the point I was just happy to finish it and the ending didn’t hit as hard as it should’ve at all. Not to mention the ending was spoiled by the narrator prematurely. It was.. a choice on the authors behalf for sure. I can’t say it’s one I necessarily enjoyed though.
I think this novel is a fantastic learning experience. But unfortunately that was not what I was looking for diving into it.
It has great aspects, but overall I found it disappointing.
