August Pullman is just about to start his first day of 5th grade, his first day at a normal school. August has always been homeschooled because of the facial deformity he was born with and the many surgeries he had to undergo when he was younger. August (Augie) is nervous that no one will want to be friends with him because of how he looks.
Wonder is a great book, and I think it is really important for young adults to read. It shows that August, just like other 5th graders, wants friends and wants to be treated with kindness. It shows the impact that bullying has on him as well as how he is affected by those who treat him with kindness. I plan to have this book in my future classrooms to help teach students kindness.
