The Gate House by Nelson DeMille

1.0

This is the longest book about nothing I've ever read.

This book heavily references The Gold Coast. By that I mean, almost every page makes mention of something from The Gold Coast. Susan's shooting of Frank B is rehashed 50 or 60 times. John's 10-year absence and sailing world tour is mentioned several dozen times. Each new character in the book comes with a thorough rehash of past events.

There was very little plot, and until the last 50 pages, no action at all.

Huge chapters are dedicated to John and Susan fighting with her parents for her share of $100M the parents control, but didn't earn. It's multiple generations of trust fund babies arguing about who will control the money for future generations. None of the characters were very likable, with the exception of the police and FBI agents.

I love Mr. DeMille's writing and have enjoyed 10 or 12 of his other books, but his heart really wasn't in this one. Save yourself and read one of his others.
