skwinslow 's review for:
Harlem Shuffle
by Colson Whitehead
Five stars because Colson Whitehead is a genius, full stop. I would probably not have been drawn to a novel described "a gloriously entertaining novel of heists, shakedowns, and rip-offs set in Harlem in the 1960s" -- sounds fun, but my reading list is long -- except that Colson Whitehead wrote it. I know I need to go back and read his earlier work, because the versatility of his writing is astonishing. The characterization in this story is phenomenal, as well as the brilliant evocation of a particular time and place. And it turned out to be exactly the book I needed to read to take me out of my own particular time and place, at the moment.
