What a totally absorbing book full of heart, flawed characters, friendship and gaming. The relationships were so well written and, for me, Sam’s chronic pain was described very effectively.

This is a book I was a little scared to read as everyone’s been raving about it but, believe me, all the praise is deserved! I know hardly anything about gaming other than the classic games I played in the 90s and it didn’t matter a bit. So good, it even made me cry which doesn’t happen often at all.

I understand that the author isn’t disabled herself and I was impressed with how Sam’s experience was written, the struggle to come to terms with an injury turning from something fairly manageable to a long term chronic pain condition to permanent disability and the difficulty of accepting a mobility aid is something I can relate to myself and was explored well here.

The main characters have a strained relationship at times as they are such different people and I enjoyed reading about the ongoing tension between them as they try to remain friends and work together closely in an industry that’s just emerging, and is therefore both very exciting and full of uncertainty.
This is a book that’s memorable, character driven and has a brilliantly compelling plot - highly recommended
