My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante

4.0

I'm genuinely speechless at that ending. I mean, I'm angry, tense and anticipating anticipating sequel so I guess I'm not that speechless. I'll have a more in depth review up but for now, the portrayal of female friendship against the backdrop of a very poor Italian neighbourhood was unlike any other book. The female experience, especially in regards to the discomfort and confusion of puberty and so on, was interestingly done- I found myself relating more to Lila's experiences in that regard but with with narrative style chosen, and knowing Lenu loves Lila dearly, it did make me question the high regard she'd placed upon her friend, almost as though she worshipped her.

This is a book that will stay with me for a long time to come. Nothing has made me feel the depth of emotion I've felt while reading this.
