Winter's Heart by Robert Jordan

3.0

"A man who trusts everyone is a fool and a man who trusts no one is a fool. We are all fools if we live long enough."
------------
I considered giving this a lower rating but decided not to. Honestly, I could barely keep going as evidenced by how long it took me to read this one. I was expecting to like it more as it's my friend's favorite of the series. It jumped to so many different POVs that all had very little coherence with where the characters were left.

There didn't feel to be much of anything happening, and there were so many secondary characters suddenly thrust into the forefront that it was hard to keep track of who they all even were. Then a whole bunch of crazy shit happened at the end, with some way out of left field curves, like Dashiva being one of the Chosen, that just made no sense.

Rand and Nynaeve cleaning the Source should have been given a lot more literary priority but it felt really rushed at the last 20 pages of the book. The weird obsession Jordan has with polygamy and awkward shared intimacy through the bond is really distasteful alongside his clear misogyny. Overall, glad this one is done but a bit daunted about 9 remaining books in the series given how poor the last 2 were. I would love some more consistent POV with clarity and better pacing.
